Last week, the House Ways and Means Committee (HWMC) introduced a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Various health stakeholders have denounced the imminent legislation since it is expected to take away coverage from millions of Americans and steeply increase consumer costs. Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA, says the recent proposals by both the HWMC and the House Energy and Commerce Committee achieve the exact opposite of what President Trump vowed to do: protect health coverage and reduce costs for families. Instead, the recent HWMC bill provides substantial tax benefits for the very wealthy and eliminates health care affordability for working-class families. Pollack believes that “strong, negative reactions to the bill will undoubtedly intensify” as people begin to realize their “health lifeline[s]” are in jeopardy.
